Kari motioned to Becca to look at her computer screen. “Right there. See what I mean? Doesn’t it seem like he’s blaming the Foundation of New Visions in Giving staff? You can’t expect anyone to be okay with you ripping off $450 million. What is wrong with that guy?”

“Weren’t you listening?” said Becca. “He’s a religious zealot, crazy with a burning desire to do God’s work.”

Kari and Becca had missed the actual live performance a few hours earlier but heard from several victims that the Facebook Live video had been posted and was available for replay. They had watched it three times in a row.

“Jesus Christ,” said Becca. “Look at the number of likes, hearts, and shares the video has already generated.”

“Nearly three hundred in less than an afternoon? You’ve got to be kidding?” Kari moved the cursor to the comments. “Let’s see who isn’t buying his BS. Maybe we can discover a few witnesses willing to say something negative about him.”

She scanned the posts listed under the real-time comments.

Becca groaned. “Ugh. Look at all those people weighing in.”

“Let’s get an analyst assigned to review the comments and see if there’s anything relevant to our case among them. You never know.”

“Good idea.” Kari scrolled through a few more comments and then stopped. “You want to watch the video again?”

“Sure. I can’t get enough of it.”

Kari hit the play button, and Cuddy Mullins’s mug appeared on the screen again. In his lap was his little, white terrier. During the video, he stroked the puppy’s fur with a steady and loving touch.

“I accept full responsibility for what has happened. I was the engineer in the lead car when this train derailed and jumped the track. And for that, I am truly sorry.”

“Great metaphor,” said Kari. “That damn train wreck just about killed and maimed every person and nonprofit on board with him.”

“I appreciate the kind words of encouragement that many of you have sent me. I wish I could return all of your calls and emails, but my attorneys have advised me to instead reach out to you through this medium. So I’m here with my little buddy Hairy Potter to answer your questions and hopefully relieve some of your concerns.”

“I have to admit, the dog was a good idea,” said Becca. “Who doesn’t trust a man who loves his little doggie?” The video continued playing.

“The first thing that I must say to you all is that I never meant to hurt you. From the very beginning, my vision was to change the world for the glory of God. I believed creating the Foundation for New Visions in Giving as a vehicle for increasing charitable donations was my life’s calling. I know you’ve already read and heard the foundation has ceased operations, but I thought it was important that you hear directly from me. The concept of participatory philanthropy was my greatest contribution to the world of charitable giving. Unfortunately, I took that idea but did not develop a platform strong enough to propel it forward.
